Doorway widening Q&A
How wide does a doorway need to be for a wheelchair?
Standard wheelchair clearance is 32 inches. For tighter turning angles or larger power chairs, we widen to 36 inches. We measure during the assessment and recommend the right width based on the equipment.
Does widening a doorway require an electrician or plumber?
Sometimes. Light switches and outlets within the existing frame may need to move. If the wall contains plumbing, that adds scope. We confirm what is in the wall before quoting so there are no surprises.
Is offset-hinge an alternative to full widening?
Yes. Swing-clear (offset) hinges add two inches of clearance without altering the frame. For doorways already at 30 inches, offset hinges can be enough. We recommend them when they solve the actual problem.
